Vampire Academy Series
Author: Richelle Mead
Genres: Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy
When I was 14, I found the enchanting and exciting series that is ‘Vampire Academy.’
How obsessed was I?
- In my school planner, I counted down the days for when the next book would be published (and would proudly tell me friends too).
- Would pre-order the newest book to make sure I would have a copy the day it came out
- I’d read the books every form class, break and lunch hour alienating myself from my friends who would chat around me.
- Never left home without a copy in bag.
The series revolves around the unbreakable friendship between the protagonist, Rosemarie ‘Rose’ Hathaway, a Dhampir and Vasilisa ‘Lissa’ Dragomir, a Moroi Princess. What makes their friendship so special is their bond. When they were fifteen, they were involved in a car accident with Lissa’s family. Lissa’s family died, but so did Rose. Lissa was overcome with so much grief from Rose’s death that Lissa brought her back to life with Spirit, making Rose become shadow-kissed. This allows Rose to read Lissa’s emotions, intentionally and unintentionally enter her mind, and sense whenever Strigoi are near.
What is a Dhampir and Moroi?
I’m glad you asked!
Dhampir: half human-half vampire’s, who are taught from a young age the art of combat and that their lives are spent in dedication to protecting the Moroi. Having being implemented in their minds from a young age, majority of Dhampir’s aspire to be a ‘Guardian.’ They live by the saying, ‘They (Moroi) comes first.’
Moroi: mortal, full blooded, ‘good’ vampires. This special race are protected by Dhampirs as the race is dying out and are seen as ‘delicate.’ Each Moroi specializes in a magic element, either; Fire, Water, Air, Earth and very the rare, Spirit.
But who does the Dhampir need to protect the Moroi from?
The answer; Strigoi.
Strigoi: Undead, ‘evil’ vampires. They target the Moroi to kill and drink their blood. They can be defeated by beheading, fire but predominantly having a stake driven through their heart.
The series begin with the two teenagers (aged 17) on the run after escaping from their boarding school, St. Vladimir Academy, where Dhampirs for Morois are taught side-by-side. After two years in hiding, they are captured and brought back to the Academy by, Guardian Dimitri Belikov.
A popular genre within the novel is paranormal romance. Forbidden love to be exact as Rose falls for her 24 year old instructor (Dimitri) and Lissa (a royal proncess) falls for the social outcast, Christian Ozera, whose parents willingly became Strigoi.
The novel is set in the school setting of St. Vladimir Academy.
A reason why I admire these books and Richelle Mead’s writing so much are the relateable themes and issues that run through each page, despite the paranormal and fantasy genre. These themes/issues include:
- Social Hierarchy
- (Forbidden) Romance
This book series inspired me to write because of the strong main characters. Each character is so distinguishable, by their descriptions, dialogue and vulnerability.
I want to create characters that too impact readers, characters that people can relate to and feel a bond with.
To me, Rose Hathaway is the definition of a strong and bad-ass female protagonist. And I am so grateful to have found her and this series.
